Chapter 8

Our mood wasn’t good as we started moving deeper into Glimmerwood, and I barely stopped myself from looking over my shoulder. No one seemed to have followed us in, though I wasn’t sure I could trust that.

Melusine seemed to have believed we would be safe inside the fairy woods, and I hoped she was right, and yet…

I shook my head. Not even the colorful woods around me, which had marveled me the first time I saw them, managed to do anything to displace the dread I was feeling.

Emily’s head turned one way and the other, and I looked at her, raised an eyebrow. “It surprises me that no one has crossed our path yet. The fairies are all over Glimmerwood, or they tended to be, at least.”

That must have meant they were aware there was a threat against them. Maybe they didn’t know the particulars, and the abominations didn’t seem to have gotten what they wanted yet, or they wouldn’t be holding around the woods, yet that they kept away from the edges seemed to show they knew there was someone out there, trying to attack them.

There wasn’t anything else for us to do but to continue forward and hope for the best.

It was almost as if there were eyes on my figure. I couldn’t quite explain why I felt that; I swiveled my head one way and the other, trying to find a hint of anyone observing us, and failed to do so. And yet…

Was it me, or was the branch of one of the trees near us moving?

I paused, stared, then shook my head when I didn’t see any more motion, believing I was seeing things.

Fortunately for us, the first fairies didn’t take much longer to appear in our line of sight. There was a small group, ten or twelve of them, none of them taller than a human baby would be, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be a threat. The small, slim swords they held seemed quite capable of making a pincushion out of someone.

“Lady Arianna bade us to take you to her.” Their seeming leader said, their flying frames coming to hover all around us, and I only exchanged a glance with Emily before telling them to lead.

It still took us a while to reach the fairy leader, who stood close to what I imagined was the center of Glimmerwood. The closer we came to her position, the more fairies we saw, and it wasn’t hard to realize they were tense. Many had weapons of some kind in hand; others were practicing with magic, casting runes over some of the trees close to them and even the soil. There was so much magic being flung around that I could feel it in my bones, it made me almost tremble at the power of it, and I couldn’t deny it was an intimidating sensation.

The only other time I had felt something this powerful was when I saw Amaranth in her natural form, and suddenly I realized why everyone believed Glimmerwood was practically unassailable.
